Our activity in the field of education in first aid and CPR started quite accidentally, when our Foundation’s yearly ‘Woodstock’ Festival was canceled by then government. It became a great excuse for organizing ‘wild’ meeting in Nesterowka instead. The meeting was attended the group of Peace Patrollers (volunteers who have been providing safety and watching for order during Festivals) and the representatives of couple non-governmental organizations. Polish Red Cross who was one of them, took the opportunity and time to share the knowledge on the first aid and CPR with all the present people. Their deep interest into the topic inspired us to organize another series of lectures. Two months later, we organized first official and complete training in collaboration with the Polish Red Cross. All participants received certificates and joined the group of Peace Patrol. We have been organizing similar training every two weeks ever since. Even though the interest in the courses was truly enormous and there were more people who wanted to come than we were able to train, we kept challenging ourselves to make our offer more and more attractive. We added survival program to 16 hours of lectures. Then, we combined the survival program with the accidents’ simulations so that people could practice newly learned skills in almost real-life situations. We started inviting proffessional rescue teams for participation in simulations. After few years we had our own instructors and we figured that if we are supposed to provide regular training we have tothink of creating the base. That was the first step towards creating the Center as it exists today. Next was searching the right place. Eventually, we chose old mill beautifully located in Northern Poland, in Szadowo, near Malbork. Surrounded by picturesque Liwa River and forestry hills, the Center and training area are truly charming. So are the old mill and the training site itself –both officially inaugurated after careful renovation on September 11, 2003. Since then, we’ve run training for all who want to become Peace Patrol. In March, 2005 we started collaboration with the American Heart Association. Our Center of Voluntary Service is the official AHA training site. On June 12, 2005 we received from the hands of AHA representatives’ certificate, which officially enables us to run HEARTSAVER CPR/ AED courses. Purpose of this course is teaching people instinct approach to CPR. After completing the course, they will know how to approach injured person, how to check for signs of life and help them. It also teaches how to use AED. All Peace Patrollers learn this class. Their training includes also lecture and exam on providing safety during mass events. Besides basic courses for Peace Patrol we provide also courses of serving climbing wall, serving survival events, BLS/AED and BTLS courses. Today, the goals and objectives posed to Szdowo-Mill are not only teaching CPR and first aid to future Peace Patrol but also working for the benefit of the whole society through providing free courses for police, fire fighters, and workers of public places such as for example museums. On top of that, within the action 1% of tax for AED, we provide police departments, fire fighters stations, and other spots with AEDs. In April, 2006 we also introduced ‘CPR for Schools’ program. Szadowo is the base for all these initiatives. |
