Program of Implementing Infant Flow System as Non-Invasive Method of Sustaining Breathing in Neonates -is the most advanced in the world!
The program results in placing Poland on the first place in the world as regards the ratio of number of infant flow devices to the number of births yearly. Our organization purchased 147 devices, which already served 2935 children. The use of infant flow method decreased the number of lungs’ complications in children by 79%. In 2006 we are planning purchase devices for next neonatal intensive care units and further collaboration with 116 units participating in the program.
It often happens that the smallest and most fragile patients, treated in neonatal centers suffer of respiratory distress syndrome. The best and most up to date method useful in this condition is Infant Flow Advance System. The objective of the ĐINFANT FLOW ADVANCE IN RESIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME-PROJECT is providing the devices to all neonatal divisions in Poland.
Infant Flow Advance is a non-invasive method of respiratory support for newborns. The system is based on CPAP (Continuous Positive Airways Pressure). NCPAP is a little device which is placed on the baby's face and doses the right amount of the oxygen under the baby's nose. Unlike the traditional respiratory support, it distinguishes between the inhale and exhale stages and it is not inducted to the baby's throat.
Traditional mechanical ventilation saves life but it is also painful and causes acute and chronic side effects such as CLD (chronic lung disease) and AL (air loss). The main advantage of the Infant Flow system is not causing any of them.
CLD and AL are serious conditions, which require patient's frequent and extended hospitalizations, result in child's worse psychological and motor development, increase mortality and from the society's point of view they also increase patients' treatment costs.
Infant Flow Advance was invented in the US but even there it is not widely used yet. The GOCC Foundation created the medical program, popularizing the method in Poland. In 2002, first 13 CPAP-s, funded by GOCC, started working in 10 neonatal centers. The goal was to check up the therapy effectiveness as well as train and let practice doctors and most importantly nurses who are going to be the backbone of the program, just like in case of the Universal Newborns Hearing Screenings, which wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the Polish nurses. In 2004, the GOCC funded next 63 CPAP-s for 56 public neonatal centers and emergency rooms.
The actual program was officially inaugurated in March 2004. Jurek Owsiak, the president of the GOCC, 60 doctors and nurses from neonatal centers met in Mother's and Child's Health Institute in Warsaw. Owsiak's speech, in which he confirmed that the Foundation would fully cover the expenses related to the infant flow program realization, was followed by the training session for present doctors and nurses.
In their reports on the state of infant flow use, all the representatives of 10 centers participating in the pilot program agreeably concluded that the system is very effective, none of them pointed to any complications, and they all summed up that the practice is the factor crucial for the wide and universal use of infant flow advance.
Finally, Jerzy Owsiak expressed hope that infant flow project will eventually become as successful as the Neonatal Hearing Screenings project.
At the moment, there are 76 nasal CPAP-s working in 66 secondary and tertiary neonatal centers in Poland.
The main benefits of this project are defined by the survival rate improvement, the decrease in frequency of chronic lung disease, and shorter period of hospitalization. In long term, the improvement of somatic and neurological development is expected with further reduced number of re-admission and economical demands for the society.
