Program of Insulin Pumps in Diabetic Children Therapy–we started from scratch and now we are world leaders!

In 5 years, we purchased 1796 personal insulin pumps for children below 10 years old. The youngest patient using pump was 4 weeks old. We also purchased 50 pumps for pregnant women with diabetes treated in diabetic centers in Cracow, Warsaw, Zabrz, Lodz, and Gdańsk. Since two years, Ministry of Health covers monthly costs of using pumps, which is official government’s response to our work. In 2006, we will fund next 300 personal insulin pumps.

Poland is the country with one of the highest number of children suffering of diabetes, in the world. 1000 children get sick every year and 10 000 children are suffering of diabetes already. The objective of PUMPS THERAPY FOR DIABETIC CHILDREN PROJECT - is to provide personal insulin pumps for all diabetic children from 0-10 years old.

The insulin pump is a little device attached to the baby's body, which provides constant and painless glucose dosage.

This relatively new method (it was introduced in 70’s) proved to give awesome results in pediatric practice. The Insulin Pumps therapy might provide better metabolic control, decreases the hypoglycemia risk, and prevent severe complications such as kidneys, heart, or vision irreversible damages, common in diabetes.

The Insulin Pump is not only modern and effective way of treating diabetes but it also improves the comfort and quality of life for diabetic children, especially those youngest. It releases them from constant stress, pain, and in the future from trauma related to the childhood dominated by painful injections, waking up in the night for sugar level measuring, and never ending restrictions in regard to foods and drinks. It also relieves parents from stress caused by looking at their suffering and defenseless kids.

In Poland, insulin pumps were introduced for the first time in the 80's. It wasn't until 2000 though, than the therapy became widely practiced and concerned more than just single patients. In 2000, the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity funded insulin pumps for 3 children with diabetes. In 2001, 205 of such pumps, in 2002 - 300, in 2003 - 11, in 2004 - 350, in 2005 - 460, and in 2006 – 467. All together, over 1796 pumps, contributed to promoting the most modern method of treating children with diabetes in Poland.

In March 2004, the president of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, Jurek Owsiak, officially announced that from now on, funding personal insulin pumps for the youngest diabetics, qualified for the treatment by their doctors, was becoming the regular and systematic medical program, coordinated and financed by the GOCC Foundation.

In 2004, GOCC started funding the newest model of the insulin pumps, which so far is used only in the US and it did not premiere until October, 2003. Comparing to the older models the new one is much easier for applying, what eliminates mistakes while mounting. It also measures the right amount of insulin which should be dosed with the specific food at the specific time, what prevents dosage mistakes.

In his official speech inaugurating the program, Jurek Owsiak appealed to the diabetologists from all around the country for the energetic, creative, and effective collaboration, and flexibility, and for avoiding the environmental and personal discords and competitions. He asked for the collaboration driven by the positive energy, smile, and honest, hard work, resulting in treating diabetic children in Poland using the method of XXI century.

Jurek also emphasized that it is not about creating a huge program council and it is not about bureaucracy but about people who have vision, spirit, and will, about people who are ready to take a challenge, and who care for the benefits of patients because only such people can really change the situation of 10 000 diabetic children in Poland.

All diabetic divisions in Poland participate in the Insulin Pumps for Diabetic Kids Program.
