Program of Universal Neonatal Hearing Screenings –we screen 99% of all neonates, we have tested over 1000 000 babies, we are the best in the world!

Thanks to our UNHS Program, children with hearing impairments are diagnosed in first weeks of their lives, which enables undertaking early rehabilitation. Our activity resulted in obligating all neonatal units in Poland to perform UNHS by Health Ministry. In 2006 we hope to sustain the success of the program and push forward productive collaboration with 500 neonatal units participating in the UNHS Program so far.

Two babies out of a 1000 have impaired hearing. Next two are profoundly deaf. In Poland, 90% of these babies are not from the risk group, which means that they would never be screened for hearing impairments at birth and probably their hearing problems would not be detected before 6th months of life if it was not for the Universal Neonatal Hearing Screenings Program.

The objective of this program is to screen 100% newborns population at birth. In just two years, it reached the point in which 99% of the newborns population is screened at birth each year and every single screening's results are registered in the database, which enables following what is happening with kids requiring help and is their treatment effective. It also gives the opportunity for constant improvement of the service quality.

There are two methods of hearing impairments detection: ABR- Auditory Brainstem Response and OAE - otoacoustic emissions. Both are painless and harmless for the baby. In the GOCC program we use OAE. Babies are screened on the second day of life. Regardless of the test results, children from the risk groups are observed after releasing from the hospital, for couple months. Babies who failed first screening are immediately directed to the council centers, where they are diagnosed. Then, the rehabilitation method is selected and the follow up program starts immediately, preferably before turning 3 months old.

This gives the chance to even profoundly deaf children for developing speech, communicating and functioning just as their healthy equals in schools and then within the society.

Such children have the same options and opportunities to choose from than hearing children. They don't have to be limited to the circle of deaf kids only. They can have friends among those hearing and deaf. In future, they can get whatever education and job they want.

The Foundation inaugurated the program in 2000. First as a pilot and then as a systematic program, it has been very successful. All neonatal wards in the whole country have been participating in screening action and creating the database.

Logistics of the program are based on the experiences of other countries working on introducing the screenings. The main difference though is that in Poland, from the very beginning we have thought of implementing the screenings in ALL neonatal wards, not gradually but at once.

The program continues and each day around 1500 tests' results, from 440 wards, runs down to the database.
