American Heart Association Courses

The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The result of their national campaign and variety of CPR courses run in the US is significant increase in public access to AED and social awareness observed in recent year. The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Foundation started co-working with AHA in the year 2005. Since then, we have been actively promoting public access to AED and providing AHA courses in Poland.

So far, we have certified
1355 people
Our Foundation was first exposed to the AHA objectives and projects while visiting WISER Center in the University of Pittsburgh, USA. We visited WISER to see how one of the best simulation centers in the world is equipped and possibly adapt some ideas for Szadwo Mill, which could then become great place for practicing skills for all medical students from Poland and maybe even Eastern Europe.

On the occasion, University stuff also exposed us to the projects of American Heart Association. What we loved about all AHA materials and courses was how clear, simple, and easy to follow for us, people with no medical background, they were. We loved stretching the importance of exercising CPR during training. We immediately thought of getting the license to teach these courses in Poland, especially that AHA teaching system has been already successfully adapted in numerous countries all around the world.

We took first steps towards making Szadowo-Mill the official AHA training site in Poland right away. As soon as in March 2005, American Heart Association instructors; some based in University of Pittsburgh and some from New Jersey, came to teach the group of Peace Patrollers Heartsaver/ AED course. Everybody passed exam and got the license to teach this course to others. Szadowo-Mill got the license of the official AHA training site.
On the same week, we started running free courses for the police, fire fighters, water and mountains rescue teams, medical groups, cap drivers, workers of the museums and other public places. Along with the training, we have been donating AEDs. In 2005 and 2006 we donated 220 AEDS.

We are financing courses and AEDs for public use thanks to taxpayers’ voluntary donations. Polish citizens have the right to give 1% of their tax to chosen non-governmental pro bono publico organization.
